Biography

Dr. Mark Dorreen
Director of the Light Metals Research Centre, the University of Auckland, and
Vice President, Technical at Energia Potior Limited

Mark is the Director of the Light Metals Research Centre, based at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Mark has over 20 years’ experience (10 years at the Light Metals Research Centre) in research and development, technical support and project management in metal production industries.

Mark holds a Bachelor degree and PhD in Chemical and Materials Engineering, both from the University of Auckland. His PhD focussed on current efficiency measurement and anode effect gas emissions in aluminium smelting, and included his first time spent working in smelters.

His main smelter based projects now involve working in carbon plants and rodding rooms. Mark is also a lead instructor for LMRC’s industrial training courses that are customised for and delivered at various smelter sites.  He also plays a guiding role in the fundamental research programs carried out in the Centre.

Mark is also the Vice President, Technical at Energia Potior Limited, the company responsible for bringing the EnPot shell heat exchanger technology to smelters worldwide.  EnPot enables smelters to modulate their energy consumption on an hourly, daily or seasonal basis, changing the energy supply dynamic and allowing them to integrate with renewable energy grids.

Mark is a member of the TMS Aluminum Committee, is a regular speaker at aluminium conferences and has recently been appointed to the Advisory Board of the Future Aluminium Forum to offer expertise and advice on integrating Industry 4.0 across primary aluminium production.
