Biography

Mr. Bassel El Khatib is Chief of the Arab Regional Division, Directorate of Programme Development and
Technical Cooperation, at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Prior, he
has served for seven years in the UNIDO Agribusiness Development Department, managing technical
assistance programmes and projects on agro-food industrial development in various countries of Africa
and the Middle East; mainly achieved through the establishment of large industrial infrastructure
projects, such as industrial parks. Earlier, he had been appointed acting Deputy Director of UNIDO
Regional Office in Abuja, Nigeria, leading and managing projects in West Africa on agro-industries
development. Early in his tenure at UNIDO, he has been leading initiatives on post-crisis industrial
rehabilitation and food safety programs in Lebanon, playing the role of Coordinator of the Food Safety
Panel (2002 – 2007) mandated to draft the National Food Safety law.

Mr. El Khatib is a Lebanese national and holds a PhD in Industrial Economics & Management received at
the Czech University of Life Sciences, in Prague, Czech Republic, and a M.Sc. in Agricultural and Food
Sciences as well as a Bachelor on Agricultural Engineering from the American University of Beirut,
Lebanon.
